Of course, the right amount depends on a number of factors, such as your dog's breed, physical fitness, and energy level.

These are the only dog saddlebags I've ever used, so I don't have much to compare them too. They've held up well so far. Our dog (yellow lab) doesn't mind wearing them at all. It's a little big on him but stays in place pretty well, and as he's not a year old yet they seem to be the right fit for that sized dog. The rings are nice so that we can clip carabiners to the rings so that we can attach other things to the outside of the saddlebags and hang them easily. It's a convenient way to free up space in our backpacks by not having to carry his food and water dishes and dog bags ourselves.
Bought this for my medium sized pitlab, she loves it. If you think your dogs gonna be bothered by this, think again! Mine loved it! They might run into some stuff at first as they get used to the side pockets! Easy to out on and take off! If tightened correctly there's no choking or strain on the neck. If you pack this thing evently on both sides, there's no sagging or leaning! I was able to fit a water bottle on each side a small Tupperware bowl which I put a bag of dog food inside I also had treats and a dog toy and some Paracord in here with no issues! And for added bonus the slide in pockets can hold two more water bottles one each!
I bought this dog pack for my mixed breed Alaskan Malamute Labrador. He's a big dog, about 110 pounds. He's very active and needs a lot of exercise. Using this pack helps give him a little more of a workout. I put a couple of frozen water bottles in each side to add a little weight and to help cool him down on warmer days. It's nice that he can carry his own stuff! One of the things I love about this pack is that it sits high up on his shoulders instead of the middle of his back where other packs sit.I wasn't sure this would fit my large breed dog, but it fits him well and I think it could even fit a slightly larger dog.The pack seems well constructed and has a nice rugged look.
Our 70lb pitbull is very anxious, distractible, and does not walk well on a leash. He's constantly stopping, starting, lunging, etc. Our dog training recommended this, and it has done wonders for us! We put 2.5lb disc weights in both side pockets (which is appropriate for his weight), and it gives him a "job" to do. He's oriented and focused. It's amazing! His pulling has lessened by 75%, and with ongoing training, should resolve completely. He LOVES his backpack. As soon as we take it out he is excited and ready to go! Not to mention he looks so handsome with it on. And he carries his own poop bags :)
I was originally turned on to getting my dog a backpack once I read that Cesar Millan recommended it for giving dogs a “job”and extra excercise on their walk.My wife and I adopted a pit last month and she’s been great. On our walks we’ve made improvements just her and I alone, but she’d still pull a bit and get anxious around strangers and other dogs. This backpack has been a game changer! We put 4 water bottles in the pockets (2 each side) and strap this thing on her (which she enjoys wearing) and our dog loves it. There is absolutely no tension on the leash and she stays right by my side. It’s been a great training tool to get her to follow me on walks and be more calm and submissive around other people. The product itself is durable, has lots of storage and just looks fun and adventurous. Almost like what Indiana Jones would put on his dog. Couldn’t be more happy!
